I believe that of all of the male disney Villains, Frollo was the most evil. I mean, burning an entire city, carelessly throwing people's lives away to find what he wants? Most definitely evil.
Yet, he's one of my favorite Disney Villains. I think he really defines what a villain is.
So, just wanted to start a thread about him. What do you all think of Frollo?

The thing that makes Frollo terrifying is that he hinds behind religion. It makes you think...

Also, to everyone but the main characters and the archdeacon, he looks like a good man of the people...

I also think that Frollo is the greatest Disney villain ever, and the only realistically evil one. Still, he's definitely my favorite. He's my favorite character out of any Disney movie, really. That's probably because I find him extremely attractive, though. The dark, evil, old, sensual guys just get me. I love them. Plus, Frollo is also very tortured, and I feel bad for him. Yeah, he blames everyone but himself, but the poor guy...

Yes. Yes they do. And I can't help it. They're just too attractive. Come on! All the best ones have been that way! Frollo, The Phantom, Snape...

*shrug* Hey, it could be worse. While I don't particularly find Frollo attractive, he does tend to have an aura of magnetism about him. I guess because he's powerful, and he has the 'evil' look to an extent. But yes, of all the Disney villains, he is most definitely the most evil and realistic. *nod* And I think Maleficent is the most realistic of the females, despite all of the magic use and whatnot and I'm going off topic... Tony Jay was the perfect voice for him, as well. I love his voice, both speaking and singing.

I tried to see Frollo the way his die hard fans do, but I just...can't. My heart is cold toward him. Hmpf. But I do like Javert from Les Mis and it's fun to compare the two. Only, Frollo hides behind religion and what is "right" while he is really evil inside where Javert always thinks he is doing what is right and that's that. *huggles Javert*

Oh come on! You have to read the book then! Frollo is the saddest, best character ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's not evil! I actually feel a lot sorrier for him than I do for Javert. Of course, if we're just going by the Disney version vs. the musical Les Mis, I feel worse for Javert... Poor man...

I feel bad for Frollo in the book- I can see how Esme felt, and being only 16, she's really just a kid in her views- however, I think he had a worse time of it. And he was quite a good person to begin with.

And he was quite a good person to begin with. Yeah, in the book Frollo's got a dark side but he's not completely heartless and evil. (Heh, at least he gives his drunk brother money all the time...) But in the Disney movie, Frollo's completely evil and completely brainwashed by his religious beliefs. (Oh, and I also like the fireplace scene in the movie, because it I think it portrayed the Frollo-Esmeralda relationship pretty well).

Well, if we're going to discuss the Frollo of Disney... what about the prominent trait that sets him apart from all other Disney villains: Lust? This is a guy who has severely repressed his sexuality throughout his life (religious reasons? Devotion to his job? Just a general sense of sexual feelings being somehow "evil"?), and unfortunately, his desires have become rather sick and twisted. And when they finally come rushing to the surface, all heck breaks loose... imho, that repressed, perverted sexuality would have broken through eventually, Esme just happened to be the trigger that set him off. Which does bring up the unsettling question of, what would have happened if he had managed to have his way with her? Based on earlier scenes in the film, Frollo does have a sadistic streak (his instructions to the torturer about waiting between strokes), and given his attitude towards the Roma, they're inhuman and must be wiped out. And we know Esme wouldn't willingly submit to Frollo's will. I see a rape scenario, followed by the elimination of Esme (to remove evidence of what happened, plus ridding the world of a Roma), and Frollo somehow rationalizing the entire thing away as his being controlled by demons/witchcraft/what have you; "it's not my fault/I'm not to blame.... [it was] the witch who sent this flame". I guess this also brings up the question of whether it was religion that distorted him, or whether he uses religion as an excuse for what he does (a cloak to hide behind, if you will). I believe the latter, mainly because I think the Archdeacon is in the film to serve as a counterbalance, an example of what living a religiously-led life can be. Additionally, would Disney risk the wrath of various Christian denominations by portraying a character who is waped by Christianity? Granted, those arguments are neither here nor there, and Christianity (not just medieval versions of it) can be destructive. It's just my personal opinion that Frollo uses religion as a justification for his actions, rather than being compelled by his beliefs to act a certain way.

For me, Frollo is the representant of absolute evil. I know many people who find him hot, but all that I can feel for him is deep antipathy. He is hypocritical and treats Quasimodo in a dreadful manner, not to mention his implacable hatred of the Gypsies! Still, I agree with many of you on him being a realistic villain and the deepest Disney character.
